How to Stay Safe at Home: A Checklist for Seniors

Brought to you by Nowell Care at Home — (980) 276-3544

ENTRANCES & EXTERIOR

  • [ ] Clear the Path: Ensure walkways, driveways, and porches are free of debris, leaves, or cracks.
  • [ ] Brighten the Night: Install motion-activated or solar lighting along all outdoor pathways.
  • [ ] Package Shelf: Place a small bench or table near the entry to hold bags while you unlock the door.
  • [ ] Visible Address: Ensure house numbers are large and well-lit for emergency responders.

FLOORS & HALLWAYS

  • [ ] Remove Throw Rugs: These are the #1 cause of falls. If you must keep them, secure them with double-sided grip tape.
  • [ ] Manage Cords: Tuck electrical and phone cords away from walking paths; never run them under rugs.
  • [ ] Clear Clutter: Move unnecessary furniture or decor to create wide, unobstructed paths for walkers.
  • [ ] Glow at Night: Place night lights in every hallway and at the top/bottom of all stairs.

BATHROOM (The High-Risk Zone)

  • [ ] Install Grab Bars: Secure bars near the toilet and both inside and outside the shower/tub.
  • [ ] Non-Slip Surfaces: Use rubber mats or non-skid adhesive strips on the floor of the tub or shower.
  • [ ] Elevate the Seat: Use a raised toilet seat with armrests to reduce strain on knees and back.
  • [ ] Temperature Control: Set your water heater to 120°F or lower to prevent scalding.

KITCHEN & LIVING AREAS

  • [ ] The Waist-High Rule: Store frequently used items (plates, pans, food) at waist level to avoid reaching or bending.
  • [ ] Auto-Shutoff: Use appliances with automatic shut-off features to prevent fire hazards.
  • [ ] Steady Seating: Choose sturdy chairs with armrests to make sitting and standing easier.
  • [ ] Fire Ready: Keep a working fire extinguisher near the stove and check smoke detector batteries twice a year.

BEDROOM & EMERGENCY PREP

  • [ ] Bed Height Check: Ensure the bed is at a height where your feet touch the floor when sitting on the edge.
  • [ ] Nightstand Essentials: Keep a lamp, phone, and emergency alert device within arm’s reach of the bed.
  • [ ] Emergency Contacts: Post a list of emergency numbers (911, Poison Control, Doctor, and a trusted neighbor) by every phone.
